Year Training: the Five Module syllabus

The syllabus for the NVC Year Training is described below in topics per module. At the end you can also see how this is worked into a daily programme. In between modules, we support and maintain our connection with Community Calls. Elsewhere, find out about the training fees and venue

Topics by module, 2020-21: building community

All NVC Year Training modules start with a meal at 6.30pm on Thursday and finish at 4.00pm on Sunday.

Module One: Setting up a support system
1–4 October 2020.

Module Two: Setting up a conflict transformation system
10–13 December 2020.

  • Exploring our Vision, Mission and Aim.
  • Understanding conflict and your conflict history.
  • Restorative Circles, a community dialogue process developed by Dominic Barter and associates in the slums of Brazil. More info.
  • Discover different ways of being with, or even moving towards conflict.
  • Practise the skills you need to ‘host’ a conflict.
  • Learn what agreements you need in place, in order to respond effectively to conflict, when it arises.
  • Setting up a basic Conflict Transformation system for the rest of the modules.

Module Three: Healing past pain
25–28 February 2021.

  • Transforming anger, guilt, shame and depression.
  • Understanding trauma.
  • Fight, flight, freeze and self-empathy.

Module Four: Setting up a decision-making system
6–9 May 2021.

  • The principle of consent.
  • The basic elements of Sociocracy
  • Decision-making when there is a proposal present.
  • Decision-making when there isn’t a proposal.
  • Selecting a person for a role.
  • Varying the consent threshold.
  • Facilitation practice.
  • General practice session.
  • Money pile.
  • Next steps.

Module Five: Setting up Access and Resource Allocation (economic) systems
8–11 July 2021.

  • Setting up an Access (on-boarding) system.
  • Setting up a different economic system.
  • Your money story.
  • “Do what you love and ask people to support you to continue!”
  • Gift Culture or Giftivism. More info.
  • General practice session.

Daily Programme

  • 7.30–8.30 Breakfast
  • 9.00 Remembering our collective intention and planning the day.
  • 9.30 Morning session, including tea break at approximately 11.15.
  • 13.00 Lunch and free time.
  • 15.00–16.00 Empathy Home Groups.
  • 16.15 Afternoon session, including tea break at approximately 17.15pm.
  • 18.30 Evening meal.
  • 19.30 Harvesting the day’s learning.
  • 20.15 Optional space for fun and games, including singing and dancing!

Community Calls

We offer a Community Call in between each module to support learning, integration, and connection. Participants will be invited to form Empathy Home Groups meeting daily during the modules. You will be encouraged to meet (face-to-face or by Skype) between the modules to foster community and for ongoing support.
